Chromium Patent Bundle

Novel chromium compounds that reduce cholesterol levels while also increasing insulin sensitivity in humans and animals. The patent family includes compositions of matter along with the method to produce the chromium compounds. These compounds are quite versatile in their administration where the compounds can be included within food products and nutritional supplements. Additionally, the compounds are stable in acidic conditions, thereby allowing for oral administration.

A method for the synthesis of a chromium complex 2, [Cr3O(carboxylate)6(H2O)3]+ (2), wherein carboxylate is a substituted or unsubstituted C2-C5 alkyl carboxylate, is provided, including the step of: heating an aqueous reaction mixture of a Cr(III) salt, a substituted or unsubstituted C2-C5 alkyl carboxylic acid and a metal hydroxide for a time period and at a temperature sufficient to generate an aqueous product mixture comprising chromium complex 2 and non-toxic byproducts.

A time release composition is provided containing:
a chromium complex having formula 3
[Cr3O(carboxylate)6(ligand)3]+  (3)
wherein carboxylate is a C2-C5 alkyl carboxylate and wherein ‘ligand’ is a ligand that (i) renders the chromium complex insoluble or only slightly soluble in water and (ii) is acid labile, being readily displaced under acidic conditions below pH=4 and replaced by water to make the resulting water-soluble​ complex 2

and the use of the time release composition for the time release delivery of complex 2.

Dr. John Vincent, Inventor

Professor, Chemistry Department

Dr. Vincent has spent his career researching biochemical and synthetic and physical inorganic methods to characterize the function and properties of metallobiomolecules (naturally occurring molecules such as proteins, sugars, etc. that contain tightly bound metal ions). Currently, his​ research efforts are focussed on the elucidation of the role of chromium in diabetes and the maintenance of proper carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and on the use of metalloprotein affinity metal chromatography.
