Unless you have been living under some sort of rock, you know that Amazon is looking for a new place to put their secondary headquarters. Last week, the internet behemoth released a short list of cities that are still in the running to nab what will certainly be a landmark economic driver. One thing all these cities had in common was a major university in the area. Amazon wants to be near a pipeline of potential new employees. Selfishly, I’m hoping a Southeast city will win as it will surely be good for the region. (Chronicle)
Amazon wants to influence your reflection
As if they don’t already have an impact on every other part of your life, Amazon wants to be involved in your reflection too. Recently, the company filed for a patent on a smart mirror concept that would help a user optimize what to wear in certain scenery and situations. Through a series of lights, cameras, screens and projectors the mirror would display you in a beach setting or a club. This way, you can see just how awesome, or not, that new shirt you got is going to look when you hop on the scene. (CNN)
The Best Funded Tech Companies in Every State
I was shocked every state had a well funded “tech” company. Honestly. But alas, all 50 have a company that has raised millions of dollars in capital. After reading through some of them, I have decided I am one good pitch deck from a million dollar seed fund. This is either extremely optimistic or foolish. Probably a little of column A and a little of column B. (Innovation America)
Turn Your Hobby into a Hustle
I tried to get my dad to start a blog once. I had the best domain for him too. BicksClicks.com. (His nickname in high school was Bick) It didn’t go well. By that I mean, he flat out shot down the idea. This is despite the fact he is an incredible writer who just needs to rediscover his creativity after years spent in the least creative organization ever, the Federal Government. His main reason for not wanting the blog? He doesn’t have time. I thought this was real fresh from the guy that routinely plays golf Tuesdays & Thursdays, has watched practically every original show on Netflix and Amazon, and sleeps till 9:30 everyday. What my dad doesn’t realize is what a lot of people have, you can make money from your couch via the internet. A blog is a great way to do this. Or, you can offer your design services, teach a class, tutor folks, or be a social media analytics guru. And if you think you don’t have time, just know that JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter in Scottish coffee shops while she was a single mom. Maybe you can squeeze in a quick digital side job in between episodes of House of Cards.
